Legora vs CoCounsel for Small Law Firms with Legora Pricing, CoCounsel Pricing and the Seat Count That Decides It

Legora has a reported ten-seat minimum near $30,000 a year. CoCounsel sells per attorney with no minimum. Below four attorneys CoCounsel is cheaper, above it Legora is. Here is the math and the fit.

Review a legal document right now

Upload a contract, brief, lease or exhibit and LegalSoul returns the issues, the risky clauses and the page cites in under a minute. Published pricing, no seat minimum, no quote process.

Short answer. For a firm under ten lawyers, CoCounsel is the one you can actually buy, and it is usually the cheaper one below four attorneys. Thomson Reuters sells CoCounsel online to firms of up to 10 attorneys, with Westlaw Advantage plus CoCounsel Essentials listed from $256.75 a month and the standalone CoCounsel Legal reported at $637 to $784 per attorney a month depending on term. Legora publishes no price. Buying guides report about $3,000 per seat a year on a 10-seat minimum, so roughly $30,000 a year whether you have three lawyers or ten. Legora is a collaborative workspace for document-heavy transactional work. CoCounsel is research-grounded AI sitting on Westlaw. They overlap less than the comparison pages suggest.

Most Legora vs CoCounsel comparisons list features in two columns and stop at "contact sales". This one works the arithmetic for a small firm, because the seat count changes which product is cheaper. Every figure is labeled as published by the vendor or reported by a third party. None is a quote.

Which is cheaper, Legora or CoCounsel?

It depends on headcount, and the crossover sits at four attorneys. Legora's reported 10-seat minimum makes its floor about $30,000 a year. CoCounsel Legal is billed per attorney with no minimum. Below four attorneys CoCounsel Legal costs less than the Legora floor. From four upward, Legora at list price is the smaller bill, provided the reported numbers hold for your quote.

Annual figures. CoCounsel Legal: $784 and $637 per attorney a month times twelve. Legora: $3,000 times the 10-seat minimum.

Three cautions before you take that table to a partner meeting. First, the Legora column is a list price nobody at Legora has confirmed, and guides report negotiated discounts as well as much higher enterprise bands. Second, CoCounsel Legal is the flagship tier. A firm that mostly wants AI on top of research can buy Westlaw Advantage with CoCounsel Essentials from $256.75 a month, which changes the comparison completely. Third, the three-year CoCounsel price is a three-year commitment. A five-attorney firm on that term is signing for about $114,660.

What each platform is actually built to do

Legora

Legora, founded in Stockholm in 2023 as Leya, is a workspace where a team runs AI across a set of documents together. Its best-known feature is tabular review: load a few hundred agreements, define the questions as columns, and get a grid of answers with citations back to the source. It also drafts and redlines inside Word. The product assumes a team, shared matters and a steady flow of document-heavy work, which is why it lands at firms like Linklaters and Cleary Gottlieb, and why the license starts at ten seats. Legora raised a $550 million Series D in March 2026 and reports more than 800 customers.

CoCounsel

CoCounsel is Thomson Reuters' legal AI, and its advantage is the content underneath it. Research answers cite Westlaw cases, statutes and secondary sources, and drafting can pull from Practical Law. It also reviews and summarizes uploaded documents, but research is the reason firms pay for it. If your week is motions, memos and checking authority, CoCounsel fits that work and Legora does not try to.

Is Legora better than CoCounsel?

For transactional teams reviewing many documents at once, yes. Legora's tabular review and shared workspace are stronger than anything in CoCounsel for diligence and contract portfolio work. For litigation and research, no. CoCounsel answers from Westlaw's licensed case law, and Legora has no proprietary research database of its own. Pick by the work, not by the brand with more funding news.

Does Legora or CoCounsel offer a free trial?

Legora has no self-serve trial. Evaluation starts with a demo request and runs on the sales team's calendar. CoCounsel shows a Free trial button on its entry plan, CoCounsel Essentials, and one 2026 buying guide reports a 30-day trial with uploaded documents deleted at the end. CoCounsel Legal and the Westlaw bundles are sold by demo or direct purchase.

Can a small law firm buy Legora?

It can, but it pays for seats it does not use. On the reported minimum, a three-lawyer firm licenses ten seats and pays about $10,000 per working attorney a year. Guides also report a pay-as-you-go credit plan, added in 2026, for buyers who do not want the seat structure. If you are under ten lawyers and still want Legora, ask for that plan by name on the first call.

What does CoCounsel cost per user?

Thomson Reuters lists Westlaw Advantage with CoCounsel Essentials from $256.75 a month for single-circuit coverage and $399.75 for all states and federal, for new customers at firms of up to 10 attorneys, with 12 percent off on two years and 18 percent on three. CoCounsel Legal, the standalone flagship, is reported at $637 to $784 per attorney a month. Above 10 attorneys, every plan is quoted by sales.

What small firms buy instead

Start from the job, because each of these tools is a different purchase.

  • Mostly research. Buy CoCounsel through Westlaw Advantage if you need Westlaw anyway. If the Westlaw bill is the problem, our Westlaw alternatives for solo practitioners covers cheaper research options.
  • Diligence across hundreds of documents, several times a year. This is Legora's home ground. Price the credit plan against the seat plan before you sign.
  • Reading one agreement at a time before it is signed. This is most of what a small commercial or real estate practice does, and neither platform is priced for it.

That third case is where LegalSoul fits. Upload a contract, lease or brief and get the issues, risky clauses, missing terms and page cites back in under a minute. Plans are published: $99 a month for 100 reviews and $299 for 500, per account with no seat minimum, monthly, cancel any time. A three-lawyer firm pays $1,188 a year on the Solo plan against about $30,000 for Legora's minimum or $28,224 for three CoCounsel Legal seats.

Be clear about what that does not buy. LegalSoul does not do case law research, it has no Word add-in, it reviews one document per run, and it has no SOC 2 report or SAML single sign-on. A firm whose clients send security questionnaires will need one of the enterprise vendors for that reason alone.

One budget note that comes up in almost every small-firm software decision. A $30,000 annual contract is easier to carry when receivables are under control, and at many small firms they are not. If client invoices routinely sit past 60 days, it is worth setting up something to chase overdue invoices automatically before adding a five-figure commitment to the fixed costs.

Questions to ask both vendors

  • What is the minimum number of seats, and is there a usage-based plan without one?
  • What is the price for our exact attorney count on a one-year term, in writing?
  • Which features in the demo are in this quote and which are add-ons?
  • What is the renewal increase, and can it be capped in the order form?
  • Can we run our own documents in a trial before signing, and what happens to them afterward?
  • For CoCounsel: what does the same plan cost without the Westlaw bundle, and with it?

The bottom line

Under four attorneys, CoCounsel is cheaper than Legora's minimum and you can buy it online this week. From four to ten, Legora's reported floor is the lower number, but only if your work is the document-heavy team work it was built for. If research is the job, CoCounsel wins regardless of price because of Westlaw. And if the job is reading the agreement in front of you, upload it with the button at the top of this page first. The first review needs no account. For the head-to-heads against the other large platform, see Legora vs Harvey and CoCounsel vs Harvey.
