The Advantage figure lives on the Westlaw Advantage plan page, not the CoCounsel plans page, which is why most guides miss it; our Westlaw pricing breakdown works out every coverage and term. The other hard number is a headcount. Under each plan Thomson Reuters prints the line "More than 10 attorneys? Contact a sales rep." That single sentence tells you most of what you need to plan around. Below 10 attorneys you can get a configured price without much friction. Above it, CoCounsel becomes a negotiated enterprise purchase with a discovery call, a proposal and a procurement cycle attached.
Thomson Reuters' CoCounsel Legal plan page confirms the mechanics: 1, 2 and 3 year plans, longer terms cost less per month, new features are included during the initial term, online prices are for new customers only, and most buyers get access within one business day. The dollar figure loads only inside the configurator, so the numbers on the right are what buying guides captured from it in 2026.
A five-attorney firm on the 3-year plan is still committing to about $114,660 over the term before any Westlaw research subscription. If the work you need covered is reading contracts, leases and exhibits rather than case law research, the LegalSoul plans start at $99 a month for the whole account, monthly, with no seat count.

Thomson Reuters prints only two kinds of figure: the Westlaw Advantage plan prices for firms of up to 10 attorneys and starting prices for in-house legal teams (the first three rows). Every other figure below comes from a third party: buying guides, procurement benchmarks and buyers writing up their own invoices during 2026. They do not agree, and the disagreement is the useful part. Treat this as a range to negotiate inside, not a rate card.

None of these figures are from Thomson Reuters. If a vendor, a reseller or a comparison site gives you a firm CoCounsel number without saying where it came from, ask. The only price that binds anyone is the one on your own order form.
The thing that trips up most budgets is that CoCounsel is rarely a standalone line item. Two of the four plans are named after the product they attach to, Westlaw Advantage and Practical Law, and that is not a marketing accident. The AI is grounded in Thomson Reuters content, which means the content subscription is part of the purchase whether you thought of it that way or not.
So when you compare CoCounsel against a standalone AI tool, you are usually comparing a research platform plus an AI layer against just an AI layer. If your firm already pays for Westlaw, the marginal cost of adding CoCounsel is genuinely smaller than the headline suggests, and that is a real argument in its favor. If your firm does not pay for Westlaw, the comparison is not close, because you are being asked to buy a research library you did not come for.
The second thing to model is the term. The reported discount ladder rewards length: about 12 percent for two years and about 18 percent for three. A three-year commitment on a category that changed twice in the last eighteen months is a real risk, and the discount is the price of taking it. Quarterly advance billing also matters for a small firm's cash flow more than the annual number implies.
Finally, ask about implementation. Some legal AI purchases carry setup, data migration or configuration fees that never appear in a per-seat quote and can add thousands to the first year. Get them in writing before you sign, not after.

Read that honestly and the two products are not the same purchase. The first three rows buy a research platform, drafting, and AI grounded in licensed case law and know-how. The last two buy document review and nothing else. If research is the job, the gap in the table is justified. If what you actually do all week is read contracts, leases, briefs and exhibits looking for the thing that will hurt your client, you are paying tens of thousands a year for a library you open occasionally.
Several rows here favor CoCounsel. That is the point of writing the table down instead of writing a pitch.

Buy CoCounsel if your practice already runs on Westlaw or Practical Law. The AI is grounded in content you license, the citations point back into a library your associates already know how to verify, and the marginal cost of the AI layer on an existing subscription is a much smaller number than the headline. Buy it if you need research, drafting from know-how, and document analysis from one vendor with one security review and one invoice.
Buy it if procurement is a real function at your firm and enterprise controls are non-negotiable. Thomson Reuters clears vendor security review in a way a young company cannot, and if your clients audit your technology stack that is worth paying for on its own.
Look elsewhere if you are a solo or a small firm whose actual daily problem is reading documents carefully and fast, you have no Westlaw subscription to attach to, and a $30,000 annual line item would have to displace something else in the budget. CoCounsel Essentials is the AI skill set sold as an attachment to a Thomson Reuters research subscription such as Westlaw Advantage or Practical Law. CoCounsel Legal is the fuller standalone tier. The budget consequence is that Essentials rarely appears on an invoice alone, so model the research subscription it rides on as part of the cost.
CoCounsel began at Casetext, which Thomson Reuters acquired in 2023, and the product has since been folded into the Thomson Reuters lineup and repositioned around Westlaw and Practical Law. It is worth it if you already pay for Westlaw and want AI research and drafting inside that library, because the answers are grounded in content you license. It is hard to justify for a small firm that mainly needs contract and document review, where a published subscription in the low hundreds per month covers the same work without a research bundle attached.
Ask for the price broken out between the research subscription and the AI layer, so you know what the AI itself costs. Ask what happens to the rate at renewal. Ask whether setup, migration or training carry separate fees. Ask what the seat count can drop to mid-term if an attorney leaves, and get the answer on the order form rather than in an email.
Put a real contract, lease or brief through a review and read what comes back: parties, obligations, dates, risky clauses and page cites. If it does the job, the price is on the page and you can start today. If it does not, you have lost four minutes instead of a quarter.
